Zita Lenkaite was born in 1957 in the small Lithuanian town of Vilkaviskis. She is a self-taught artist who has participated in numerous national and international folk art exhibitions over a period of ten years, and has received an array of awards for her work, including a bronze medal in an international show in Moscow in 1987. One of her paintings has been selected by UNICEF for publication as a Christmas card this year.
In Lithuania, Zita was elected a member of the Lithuanian Folk Art Society, a prestigious national organization with strict competition and artistic standards. She currently lives and works in Texas, where she is studying for an academic degree. She explains her approach to art by noting that "While living under the Soviet rule, and even during the period my country was seeking liberation, I had to go through a lot of discomfort, inconveniences, and struggle in every aspect of my daily life. Art was a form of escape from the needy reality. That is why you see only peaceful historical views, scenes from leisure activities, etc., without violence or political themes."
