Paintings by Pierre Joseph Valcin

Pierre Joseph Valcin was born in Port-au-Prince circa 1925. He worked as a mechanic, then as a mason. In the early 1960's he came to the Hall of Plastic Arts with his half-brother, the renowned painter Gerard Valcin. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1966. His work is characterized by scenes from country life, birds perched on blossoming trees, and voudou themes. Outstanding also are his portraits of women with Modigliani-like faces, and slightly distorted, fragile necks. World-famous and widely documented in books on Haitian and naive art, Valcin's paintings are ranked with the finest achievements in Haitian art.
