Paintings by Micius Stephane
Micius Stephane, one of the "old masters" of Haitian art, was born in Bainet in 1912. He was a shoemaker and amateur sculptor until he was discoverd by Dewitt Peters in the 1940's. Stephane joined the Centre d'Art in 1948. Married to a blind woman, Stephane leads a quiet, domestic life. He prefers country life, which is reflected in his paintings of rural and domestic scenes. He creates his own idyllic yet down-to-earth world in his art. It is as if his wife's handicap focuses his awareness of the beauties and simple joys of life. Stephane's paintings have been widely exhibited, collected, and documented in the literature of primitive and naive art.
