Fernando da Silva, a black artist of Rio, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1939. He is, according to Rodman in his book "Artists in Tune With Their World," obsessed with love in more fleshly terms." Da Silva, one of the most famous of the Brazilian painters, is a brilliant artist and world-known. He has had numerous one-man shows both in Brazil and in Europe. He has been featured, and his works displayed, in many books on naive and Brazilian art, notably "Les Proverbes Vus par les Peintres Naifs" by Anatole Jakovsky.
