Paintings by John Pittman

John Pittman's influences are the great impressionists: Monet, Renoir, Chase, and Potthast. Unlike many artists who grapple with multiple styles, mastering none, Pittman is focused in his art. His devotion to his chosen path resulted in an early and tangible accomplishment of the power and beauty of impressionism; his rich, delicate strokes are breathtaking, romantic expressions of light and beauty. Pittman, born in Griffin, Georgia in 1959, began as a graphic artist, studying at the Art Institute of Atlanta in 1979 and the Savannah College of Design in 1984. While working as a graphic designer, he realized that his true passion was classical impressionism and traveled to New York and later Paris to study at the Art Students League in 1987 and 1989, respectively. In Paris, he followed the tradition of his predescessors by studying the works of his idols at the Louvre.

Now back in the United States, Pittman continues his studies, reading extensively and traveling to major museums to study impressionist works firsthand. He applies his knowledge by field work, making studies of the beautiful landscapes around his cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Pittman's subtle, yet powerful colors and brushwork bring us bright lilies splashed by the sun, romantic impressions of light and beauty, the eternal majesty and simplicity of nature.
