Paintings by Dubreuil, Smith, LaFaille, Bonhomme, Calixte, and Carly

These are a very interesting group of young Haitian painters (don't be fooled by Denis Smith's name) most of whom are members of a school best known as the "moderns" for lack of a better term or analysis. You will hear much more about them in the future. Henri Dubreuil, in a period of only a few years, has established a very distinctive new style, combining many traditional motifs, including mystical symbols, with a new approach to colors and the human figure. His favorite subjects are women, and he paints them in surrealistic settings using a pallette knife in an impasto manner. Those who are attuned can tell that Mr. Smith, born in Soisson-la-Montagne in 1954, is a founding member of the Saint Soleil school, and has been shown in exhibitions in Philadelphia, Paris, and Rome. Raymond LaFaille, a student of Dambreville, may well surpass his mentor. G. Calixte, we believe, has particular promise (a very versatile and innovative painter, and Carly is absolutely fascinating in his art and his philosophy. Stay tuned for more of their paintings, and for more personal information. In particular, see the fascinating story behind Mr. Carly's painting.
