Electric Gallery Updates

This information was updated November 12, 1999.  It is a chronological record of gallery additions and changes over the past several months.  Bookmark this page to see what we have added recently - see images of some of our newest exhibits at: What's New"
Our most recent gallery addition is (finally) eleven fantastic new paintings by Alain Dubreuil. We had waited over six month for these.

New Haitian art is added continuously to the gallery, but we draw your attention to a large number of new pieces by J.E. Gourgue, Luckner Lazard, Michele Manuel, J.R. Chery, Fritzner Alphonse, Fernand Pierre, Jaques Valmidor, Audes Saul, Pierre Maxo, and several others.

You are invited to view an exciting new collection of oil paintings by James Tormey in our Perspectives Wing. These striking still life studies are created in an incomparable realist style.

We have just added eight new oil paintings by the fantastic artist Kenneth Koskela in the Contemporary Art Wing.  Koskela's delightful compositions depict whimsical scenes set in the late Victorian era, or in the early twenty second century, depending on your point of view.

Please see an exhibit of new paintings by the wonderful Pennsylvania folk artist Linda Brown.

We cannot speak too highly of Suk Shuglie's use of color and form. Her paintings keep going out the door. We have ten new paintings to replace those recently sold, all attractively priced, at her new selections. If you have overlooked this artist, please see these paintings now. This is exciting stuff!

We finally have received a substantial new collection of paintings by Claude Dambreville.   This painter's work is collected by M. & Mdme. Mitterand (the former French Prime Minister), Pierre Cardin, Denzel Washington, among many others.  We represent this artist directly, and we guarantee the lowest prices on his paintings.

Our newest artist, Lynden Trip, is a west coast watercolorist whose rich colors and sophisticated compositions are a delight. We invite you to savor a pastiche of blooming camellias, trailing jasmine, climbing bougainvillea, vivid pottery and vibrant fabrics in our new collection of her work.

We have a substantial new collection of paintings, all with hand-crafted and painted frames, by the folk artist Penny Margolis.  Penny paints a world filled with color and harmony.  A fanciful touch and a hint of the mystical infuse the creatures, gardens, and villages of her faraway dreamlands.  As our current featured artist Penny's paintings are attractively priced.

We are pleased to exhibit a new collection of original paintings and limited editions by the wonderful artist Adrian Wong Shue.  This new collection features various media, and are attractively priced.  We also offer a choice of free Wong Shue prints with the purchase of any of his originals, so long as the prints remain available.

The self-taught Kentucky artist Lauftin True is well-known and widely collected.  His small gouache watercolors each are painted to fit "found" antique frames.  The careful selection of framing of these pieces particularly enhances these images.  Please see the 24 new paintings by this artist in our Folk Art Wing.

Please note that we may no longer accept orders for Babak Emanuel's original paintings.  He is now devoting all his time to producing many old images as well as new ones as hand-enhanced limited edition giclee prints.  Many of these editions are already available in edition sizes of 175.  All the artist custom-painted framing remains available in this wing, as do the original paintings by the other artists in the Monotype Collection.

You may tour four rooms of new paintings by Lee White in our Monotype Wing.  From his birth in Florida to his youth in California, and to Atlanta and the exotic islands of the Caribbean, varying cultures evolved through Lee into what we see today - an ongoing journey.

Our new jazz series by Helen Hosking grew out of her love and involvement with the music itself.  What began well into her artistic career as a tribute to Billie Holiday has evolved into an important body of work, including the bronze and paper castings, ceramics, and collages on exhibit here.

We continue to receive new selections of Haitian Voodoo Flags, on exhibit in our Haitian art wing.  Haitian Vevé banners, designed by Voudou priests or houngans, are made of satin or silk and embroidered with sequins, beads, and seed pearls in brilliant and iridescent colors.  They play a central role in the complex ritual of the voudou ceremony. Please also see a new selection of Haitian paintings by a number of artists.

New artist Peter Scott is a native New Yorker.  Without formal training, his landscapes are realistic and intricate in their brushwork. He has a photographic eye and a wealth of natural ability. In the relatively few years Scott has been painting, he has shown in more than thirty juried group exhibitions and has had a dozen one man shows in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, and Ohio.  These include a solo show at the National Geographic in New York.

At the age of 66, Spot Daniel saw paintings by Mose Tolliver, and recognized that art is neither so complex nor as simple as it is made out to be; it comes from the heart, not from the mind. He began to paint. Now 77, Daniel is one of America's leading outsider artists. Please see our new collection of his work.

We over 30 new paintings by the Usko-Ayar artists in our Amazon Project.  These include three new pieces by Pablo Amaringo. Please read the translations of the young artists' descriptions of these paintings - each painting we sell is accompanied by this document, which reflects deep and eloquent concern for the Amazonian ecology and environment.

Our brilliant new artist Charles Joffe, featured for January, is impossible to categorize. The subject matter of his large canvases ranges from still lives to landscapes, from surreal settings to commonplace items painted in incredible detail. He is also a sculptor, and creates intricately crafted, whimsical machines in gilded and polychromed wood. These "divertissements" have adorned the windows of Tiffany & Co. in New York, side-by-side with the most famous jewelry in the world.

We continue to add new artists and paintings to our (now) under $250 section. We are pleased to feature commentary on many of these artworks by Madison Smartt Bell, author of nine novels and finalist for the 1995 National Book Award and the 1996 PEN/Faulkner Award for the magnificent novel 'All Souls Rising' - his magnificent novel about the Haitian Revolution. Professor Bell's comments are drawn from his upcoming book 'Soul in a Bottle.'

Please see new work by Howard Skrill, a Brooklyn artist who paints the landscapes of New York, particularly Lower Manhattan, and the highways, swamps and towers of northern New Jersey. His powerful landscapes invariably address the natural scene as altered or impacted by the hand of man. In this exciting (and attractively priced) new collection, the artist employs new media and techniques.

Our newest paintings by Ward Smith, a musician, poet, and storyteller as well as a painter, show new creative as well as stylistic turns. Smith's work is usually described as "outsider art," a powerful means of expression. But labels often fall far short of an adequate description. In the words of Jean Dubuffet, "(Art's) best moments are when it forgets what it is called."

We are proud to feature the art of Karen Stinnett. Karen is one of the premier watercolor artists in the United States. While her subjects are "realistic," she thinks of her work as abstract. "As I work on a painting, it develops as an abstraction to the point where I sometimes forget that I'm painting representationally ...when the shapes and the colors are put together, the subject is what they form. I've always thought the random structure of the world is more abstract than pure abstraction..."

Claude Dambreville, perhaps the foremost contemporary Haitian artist, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, December 17, 1934. Dambreville has had one man shows thoughout Europe, Latin America, and the U.S., and he was sponsored by President and Mrs. Mitterand in shows at Paris and in Nime in 1991. Please see our new selections of his work.

New to our gallery is the French naive painter Martine Genicot.  Inspired by the work of Henri Rousseau and Marc Chagall, Ms. Genicot's delightful paintings are a tour of Paris, accompanied by poetic fantasy.

Please view a new collection of sixteen oil paintings by the wonderful French folk artist Anne Strasberg.  One of France's foremost primitive artists, she has exhibited several times in the prestigious Salon de Autonne at the Grand Palais, and is in the permanent exhibition of the Galerie des Naif et Primitif in Paris.

Our new artist Sondra Seeger paints striking and beautifully detailed still lives. Please tour her work in the "Perspectives' Wing.

We have added limited edition stone lithographs of Pablo Picasso's works commissioned by his estate.  The originals were done between 1899 and 1961; the lithographs, in limited editions of 500 each, are signed by the artist's daughter.

Even more attractive (in our opinion) are the hand-pulled lithographs of beautiful works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir which we just added to the gallery exhibit. These seven limited edition lithographs - editions between 950 and 1000 - were crafted by La Maison Mourlot of Paris - perhaps the finest print-makers in the world. They are produced from the artist's originals and are signed, numbered, and authenticated by the artist's grandson and only heir, Paul Renoir.

For those knowledgable of European naive art, we are proud to exhibit three new paintings (watercoloured etchings - dating from the 1980's) by the superlative Croatian (former Yugoslavia) painter Josip Generalic.

If this stuff is boring, you can go directly to the gallery lobby and view some fantastic art.  Alternatively, you can take a shortcut to move among the work of all the artists the gallery.  See our order page for information about purchasing from the gallery.  Contact us to inquire about a painting, a print, or ordering information.
