Lauftin True, a self-taught Kentucky artist, is well-known and widely collected. His small gouache watercolors each are painted to fit "found" antique frames - many of them dating from the 19th century. The careful selection of framing of these pieces particularly enhances these images.
True's subject matter is typically fruits and vegetables which, while painted in a primitive or "outsider" style, are sophisticated in their luminous coloration and form. The subjects seem to float on table-like surfaces. The magic of the images lies in their folk/primitive and child-like appeal, which leads the viewer into a sensuality and transcendence of a far more complex nature.
