Paintings by Nebogia ad Kalia (Nebojsa od Kalja)

The artist, a recognized master of Yugoslav naive painting, was born in the Croatian village of Kalja in the 1930's. His work was greatly influenced by Krsto Hegedusic, the patriarch of the Yugoslav naive school.

Working in the medium of reverse painting of oil on glass, ad Kalia meticulously paints on the back of a glass panel, constantly turning the piece to chart his work in layers of subject and detail, overpainting each segment of the scene, and waiting until each layer dries before proceeding to the next segment.

Ad Kalia's work can be found in important collections in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, England, Austria, and the U.S. Among these collectors are film stars Jack Nicholson and Elliott Gould.
