Photographs by James Valentine

James Valentine is a photographer/naturalist whose deep appreciation for nature permeates his work. As president of the Quest Foundation, he pioneered the concept of environmental art photography - images that work for conservation of our wilderness heritage. In 1981, Valentine founded the Appalachian Environmental Art Center in Highlands, North Carolina, establishing the center in his former technical photographic laboratory and housing facility.

Along with photography, Valentine's career also involves environmental lecturing/teaching, consulting, and writing prose and poetry. He coordinates his photographic work with leading environmental publishers and groups throughout the world. Valentine is a masterful laboratory technician who has produced archival photographic exhibitions for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as for other museums and galleries in the South. Southern Light is his seventh major book on the southern United States.

As President of the Quest Foundation, Valentine has also been instrumental in the growth and world-wide recognition of the Usko-Ayar School, whose young painters are devoted to the rescue and preservation of the knowledge and the traditions of the indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon.
