Sculptures by Serge Jolimeau

Serge Jolimeau was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, where he has lived all his life. He began his artistic career in 1972, working with Seresier Louisjuste, a metal sculptor; he joined the Centre d'Art the same year. A shy, quiet man, Jolimeau uses his art to cope with haunting fantasies and personal conflicts. Voudou and Haitian folklore are parts of his everyday experience. Much of his work is devoted to the deities and demons which exist in his world. Bold, sensuous forms of almost baroque exuberance are lovingly forged in each piece. The complexity and richness of his creations, which are widely collected in the U.S. and Europe, reflect Jolimeau's own complicated personality.
