'Abstract Realism' - Paintings by Charles Joffe

A New York native, Joffe, born in 1920, has been painting all his life. In 1990 he moved to Pennsylvania for a "quieter life."

Joffe's formal art studies were at Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts, American Artists School, and the Pratt Institute - all in New York. He worked as a commercial artist following his army service in World War II and had his first four exhibitions in 1947 at The American Academy of Arts & Letters, the National Academy, and Audobon Artists Exhibition, all in New York, and at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania. Since then, he has participated in many exhibitions, including the Toledo Museum, the York Historical Society, the New York Colseum, and Tiffany & Co.

The artist's oil paintings are large and striking. Of particular note are their vibrancy of color, and the acute detail evident in each canvas. In addition to his oils, Joffe creates what he calls "divertissements," intricate wooden creations which combine carving and painting. Most of them are fanciful in nature, asking the question "what if?" "What if, " for example, Shakespeare or Mozart or King David had typewriters, or the ancient Egyptians used computers? The artist creates these intricate contraptions in great detail - many of these have been exhibited in the windows of Tiffany & Co. as accompaniment to the world's most famous jewelry.

As with most great artists, Joffe's versatility defies labeling of his art. We urge you to see for yourself, by selecting the image above. You may also take a shortcut to move among all the artists in the gallery. These paintings are available for purchase from The Electric Gallery. We'd also appreciate your giving us your comments on our presentation.
