Paintings by Kristen Helberg

"Growing up in York County, Pennsylvania, I was always attracted to the brighly painted furniture native to the Pennsylvania Dutch region. Years ago, a friend in Lancaster taught me how to use the vinegar painting technique that was emplyed on the old painted furniture, so I adapted it for use on the frames for my paintings. I have also had great fun using it to decorate chests and furniture."

Kristen now makes her home in Maryland. As part of the artist-in-residency program of the Maryland Arts Council, she conducts classes and workshops throughout the state. She has also taught at the Baltimore Academy of Sciences and for the Resident Associates Program at the Smithsonian Institution. She is the published author of nine books, seven of which are children's titles.

The artist is represented by many galleries nationwide, and have been included in shows juried by the curators of the Corcoran Gallery, The National Gallery of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum. Her work is included in private folk art collections in North America and Europe, and in the permanent collection of the National Institutes of Health.

Her paintings and painted furniture have also appeared in Museum and Arts Magazine, and in three separate issues of Country Living magazine.
