Paintings by Dora Gonzalez

Dora Gonzalez was born in the 1930's on a farm at the edge of a cloud forest, far from civilization, in an area called Esperza in Costa Rica. She is the daughter of a country teacher, nurse, and pioneer mother; her father was a farmer. She grew up in a large family on their self-sufficient farm. Their household provided not only food for themselves and the scattered shacks around the farm, but also health care, entertainment, and funeral assistance, all activites in which young Dora took part. Dora's character as well as her art reflect this experience of her youth. Cheerful and down-to-earth, Dora Gonzalez is at the same time a sensitive and imaginitive dreamer. Love of life and the experience of "NOW" is clearly depicted with a contemporary flair in the bold representations of flowers and portraits. Her paintings were first exhibited in 1980 in group shows and later in solo exhibitions. Her art is in several museums, and her most recent exhibition was in the fall of 1995 at El Museo Francisco Oller Y Diego Rivera in Buffalo, New York.

Dora lives in San Jose, Costa Rica with her husband and family. Their home and lovely garden is her studio, where she still paints but less and less as her eyesight has deteriorated in recent years.

Sad note: As of May, 1998 we understand that Dora has just died. We regret her passing, and celebrate her art.
