Martine Genicot was born in Bordeaux, France in 1956. She studied fine arts in Nantes, and received her Baccalaureat in 1974. She is mainly self-taught as an artist, however, and developed her own unique style of painting.
Ms. Genicot's art can be linked to the tradition of French naive painting which is considered to have originated with Henri Rousseau. Genicot's paintings, like Rousseau's, illustrate the dichotomy between "reality" and the images of the unconscious mind. Martine's work, like Rousseau's, shows a world where the real and the supernatural are combined.
Technically, her paintings include a liberal interpretation of perspective and form, simplified to the verge of abstraction. They are also poetic, and in that sense are inspired by the work of Marc Chagall. Poetic works add to literal reality, and create a multiple reality, by replacing all the elements of a theme with a logic which is different than that of the literal image or material impression of the subject. It uses more of the senses, and calls on additional sensations and feelings in order to transcend the "normal" way of experiencing her subjects.
Our collection of Ms. Genicot's paintings is a unique tour of Paris, which becomes truly alive through the artist's eyes.
