Paintings by Josip Generalic


Generalic, a recognized Croatian master of naive painting, was born in the Podravina area of the former Yugoslavia in 1936. His father, a farmer and famous painter as well, wanted Josip to become a teacher. Nothing came of this, as the young Josip determined at an early age that his life would be devoted to art.

Generalic's subject matter is predominantly the life and scenes of Podravina, and the memories of his youth. The painting below, done in 1984, is a famous example of his unique style. Color plates of the glass painting below are illustrated in numerous publications and books on the subject of naive and Croatian art.
