Paintings by Edwin A. Johnson

Born in New York in 1934 and raised in New Jersey, Edwin Johnson now lives in Fly Creek, NY. He began to paint in 1983. Since then he has become widely known in the realm of folk art, with his remarkable scenes depicting daily country and village life. He likes to deal in seasonal presentations of life in rural New York state, New England, and Atlantic Coast towns. His art combines these tangible things with his thoughts and impressions of daily living. His first one-man show was in 1988.

Johnson is a completely self-tought folk artist, who began with ink sketches, and proceeded to paints and brushes. His paintings are noted for their beautiful color contrasts and busy compositions, alive with people and animals, and for their structure, depicting the vertical, horizontal, and movement in an innately elegant style.

Ed Johnson's paintings hang on walls throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, in private collections and galleries. They have appeared in over half a dozen national publications. He is in the permanent museum collection of the New York State Historical Association. The actor Cliff Robertson and the musician Van Halen are among his collectors.
