Paintings by Préfete Duffaut

Préfete Duffaut was born in Jacmel, Haiti, January 1, 1923. After an unhappy childhood, his drawings were his only means of expression. At 12 he worked with his father as a carpenter, assisting him as a sailboat builder in Jacmel. Duffaut joined the Centre d'Art in 1948. A naive painter, at times sophisticated, at times fantastic, he always allowing his imagination to tinker with the laws of gravity.

In 1951, Duffaut painted a famous mural at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the five famous artists whose work is memorialized in this majestic building. His work is widely exhibited in the U.S., including the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum, and in Europe, and he is renowned for his mountainous landscapes with serpentine roads and crowded street scenes.
