Paintings by Roland Dorcely

Roland Dorcely was born in 1930 in Port-au-Prince. At the age of 16 in 1946 he joined the Centre d'Arts, and in the same year he traveled to France, where he studied with the French artists Fernand Leger and Andre Masson. One of his paintings received the First Prize at an exhibition awarded by President Dumarsais in 1947.

He returned to Haiti, but went again to France in 1962, and since then has moved frequently between France and Haiti.

His works have been exhibited throughout the world, and are in the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris, and in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among other museum collections. They are in many private and corporate collections. This early work, painted in 1956, is a rare find.
