Jim Beller was born on Eric Clapton's 18th birthday in 1963 in Canton, Ohio
across the highway from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Music has always been an important influence on Beller, who began drawing when he could
first lift a crayon and has been at it ever since, switching over to watercolors and oils. Beller, who also works in animation and film, has lived in Florida,
Alabama, Virginia and the mountains of East Tennessee, where he currently resides in a log cabin with his loyal Jack Russell Terrier, Scooter.
Beller's striking and impressively large (up to six feet in width) Blues & Jazz paintings combine traditional portraits with abstract expressionistic interpretations of the music itself. An avid blues fan, Beller has tipped the elbow to many sunrises in Memphis, which has been a big influence on the artist's work, which he categorizes as "Gonzo." He cites Yail Bloor and Gene Skinner as "major influences."
The artist's paintings utilize brilliant color, attention to detail and the heartfelt passion he feels for the music and his subject matter; his oil paintings are characterized by heavy impasto. Beller, who has exhibited throughout the Southeast, East Coast and at sea in the Carribean aboard a "Blues Cruise," continues to work on his blues and jazz series when time away from his animation and film projects permits.
