The Amazon Project - Artist's Notes


Amazon Project - New Selections Room 1:

Los Sajinos: - "This is a small river branch of the Ucayali, called Amoya. On its bank there are small houses of farmers who live from hunting and agricultural things. We see virgin jungle with the diversity of flora and fauna. Near the bank are two indian hogs seeking food. They feed from roots and worms. In the center is a beautiful Ruddy pigeon (Torcasa) and at the left is a fork-tailed flycatcher waiting for some insects to catch."

Couston Life: - "From left to right, in the house there is a baby and his domestic animals. In the corner is a tinaja. Behind the house are the pifayo (palmera) and the paan del arbol (bread's tree). Going more there is a woman bringing water. Then we see a pilon, a pot and almost in the middle are the guabas tree. Now in the background there is a village. In the middle of the river is a beach and before this a Shihuahuaco tree."

Jaguar: - "From left to right, the maanchingas root ... near this is the bombonajes leaf ... after that are the bejao leaves and then the remocaspi tree. After this are the cashacaspi tree and the huacrapona tree. Behind this is the waterfall. Coming back we can see the huanganacaspi tree, a little up are the helecho's plants. Near this are the lagartocaspi tree. But going after, we see the lopuna colorada tree. Before the trees is the quiet Jaguar who is taking a good rest."

Al Pie de la Cascada: - "From left to right, a panorama of waterfall covering the stones. Each side we find trees, bushes, vines, parasite plants called Itininga, hanging from trees. On the trees there are muscusses sticked on it's bark. A little back we see that two trees form the landscape, one each side, which are covered by muscusses and vines wwhich are in the branches. Behind the tree of right in upper place there are plants called Bambu. Before at left there is a plant with red flower and yellow called regionally Situlle. On the ground we have one pecari which is going to his habitat, at the foot of the tree called Corminon."

Amazon Project - New Selections Room 2:

Growing of the Ucayali River: - "From left to right: A Quinilla tree ... it is very high and used in the lumber industry, utilized for flooring and other things. The white Patiquina is a medicinal plant here that is used in baths and also against the witchcraft and bad spirits. The Cetico tree (cecropia) is used to make paper and also in the traditional medicine using its bark and leaves. Two tangara birds known here as "Victor Diaz" live in couples and they feed on worms."

Big Rats (regionally called Pericote): - "From left to right: The tree cedar is used in industry for houses and furniture. It is a fine wood. The Itininga plant is an air plant sometimes used in traditional medicine. Capirona tree, a tall tree, is also used in industry for parkets and traditional medicine too. A palm tree called in Peru "pifayo" has fruit that is food for people and it is used in shamanism. The lily of the Amazon is an air plant used as medicine for stomach ache and cramps. The Ayahuasca vine. The big rats feed on little birds, worms and fish. They live in decayed trees. They walk in flocks."

A Foggy Dawn (Amanecer Brumosa): - "From left to right: A Lupuna tree, a very high tree and big - its cup is round. We use in the industry to make triplay. The sugar cane is utilized in food as honey and raw sugar. It is used in traditional medicine too and in liquor as the firewater. The colored Patiquina plant, it is used in the traditional medicine as it grows in groups. A termite next on a tree is used to rub the body. The Aguaje palm tree grows in marshy places. Its fruit is very healthful. They live in groups. The oil of it's worms is used in medicine to cure tuberculosis. The brush of Cordoncillo is also medicinal."

Cardenal Gris: - "From left to right: The Pitayo Palm, and the Initipina (an air plant). Initipina comes from language Quechua. It means "pineapple of the sun." Jungle people use it as an ornament. Two birds called cardenal gris. They live in the high jungle; they feed on insects and now they are becomming extinct."

Amazon Project - New Selections Room 3:

Victoria Regia: - "On the left hand of this landscape painting we see the Oje tree under a small cliff and in the middle appears the Victoria Regia flower (pink color). We also have butterflys who love the flowers. Some fish, the "Martin Pescador" at the right of the painting combine for special mixings used for the painter."

Vida Tranquila (Quiet Life): - "From left to right we see small plants of Patiquina and other variety of plants which fill the picture. To the right small bushes and some small vines. This painting is formed for insects and toads. They are beautiful butterflies in color and small graceful toads."

The Herons: - "In this painting we can see a quiet river and the sun shining over the river called "Tamaya." When you are traveling by the Ucayali River north, watching the bright colors of the jungle, you see herons catching their foods."

The Remo Caspi: - "In this painting we can see to the left side the Remo Caspi tree. This tree is used for the people that are living in the jungle for making their wooden spoons for them to eat their food. Then you can see the Ayahuasca vine. The ayahuasca vine is an important medicine used by the shamans. They use this vine for discovering the badness or sickness of the people for them to know how to heal these people. Next is a plant called Shapaja and a Pumakiro tree. It has a brown bark and it is a strong wood used for building houses."

Amazon Project - New Selections Room 4:

Waterfall: - "In the left side we can see a low jungle with vines. In the fourth plane we see some plants with white flowers and purple. Its name is Toe. We also see a very nice hawk and there is a tall tree. The picture has a waterfall and stones."

The Tahuampa: - "In this painting we see the quieted river - the Amazon people say "dead water" - where lived a lot of pirana fish, snakes, and we can find the alligators. Then we watch a big one bird called Shansho. It has a brown color. It eats insects, fruit and fish too. Then there is a Puma Quiro Tree. It is an important tree. It is yellow in color and grows in the lake."

Nido De Paucar: - "At the left side we can see two houses. There is a big river at the right side. There is a tree with a lot of birds called Paucar. There are several kinds of plants but only a special plant. It's name is wildplants. There is a boat with a man that is fishing."

Amanecer Brumoso: - "In the left side we can see several kind of trees. In the first plane we see Toucan fowl. In the right side we also see Comegen. In the back of the picture we can see a lot of grass and one deer and dry branches."
